First comprehensive SA biotech public perception study completed provides startling results on SA's knowledge of biotechnology Eight out of ten South Africans have no knowledge about biotechnology and well over half have never even heard of the term before. Despite this lack of understanding, an average of 57% indicated that different applications of biotechnology should continue.

African women in science awards

Forget Big Brother, Idols and Popstars. On Friday night four women who have made it to the finals will discover who has won Africa’s first Distinguished Woman Scientist award, funded by the South African government's department of science and technology. The winner gets R50,000.

Science heroines win national awards

Women hold up half the sky, as the saying goes, and South African women made up half the winners in the fifth annual South African science Oscars, hosted by the National Science and Technology Forum at a glittering ceremony at the Sandton Hilton in Johannesburg. Genetically modified food and seed expert Dr Jocelyn Webster of the biotechnology advocacy group AfricaBio, in Centurion, beat runner-up Coaltech 2020 in the non-profit science organisation category.

Award for Editor-in-chief of Science in Africa

Dr Janice Limson, founder and editor-in-chief of Science in Africa was one of the winners at the recently held National Science and Technology forum awards for "Outstanding contribution for science, engineering and technology". The NSTF awarded the prize to Limson for her development of the online science magazine, Science in Africa. She is currently actively engaged in research in the neuroscience research group at Rhodes University.
